“The whole Bible can be separated into two easy categories, they are Law and Gospel.” – C.F.W. Walther

Curbs our external behavior. The commandments are the basis for many civil laws and by them the government has the authority of the sword to punish the disobedient and protect the humble and helpless.

Threatens and expose our spiritual endeavors, hidden sins, and drives us remorse. This is the mirror use which drives us to humble repentance so that we stop trusting ourselves and our miserable works, but instead cry out for God’s mercy.

Gives us instruction and enlightens us to God’s will. We do not keep the commandments in order to earn salvation; we seek to keep the commandments out of response to God’s mercy and grace, in obedient honor of Him, and in loving service to the neighbor.

The promising words of the Gospel are not written on our hearts or found in human reason, but is the external message that comes from God and found in the Bible.

Is most clearly seen in the person of Jesus, namely His life, death, and resurrection. It is seen mainly in Christ and His life, death, and resurrection. It tells us what God has done, gives us comfort, points us to Christ, forgives our sin and drives us to assurance.

is not “good” and the Law “bad.” Both Law and Gospel are good for they both have the final goal of your salvation! The law prepares you for the Gospel. Law without Gospel leads to despair and Gospel without Law means the Gospel makes no sense.
